2-Days Hike from Paraty: Praia do Sono & Saco Bravo Waterfall

hike 2 days through Brazil’s Juatinga Ecological Reserve near Paraty. Hike to Saco Bravo Waterfall, swim in Galhetas Waterfall and visit the beaches of Antiguinhos, Antigos and Praia do Sono.

Spend two days exploring the Juatinga Ecological Reserve, one of the most beautiful and least-visited stretches of the Costa Verde. This trek takes you through Atlantic Forest trails, to secluded beaches and to two waterfalls where you can swim.

You only need a small backpack with your clothes. You sleep and eat in the homes of local Caiçara families, the traditional coastal communities of the region, which gives you a close look at their culture as well as the scenery.

On the first day you take a boat from Vila Oratório to Ponta Negra, where the trail begins. You then hike about 8.4 km through lush forest to Saco Bravo Waterfall, which drops into a natural pool beside the open ocean. After a night in a Caiçara home with dinner, you start the second day with a hearty breakfast and walk about 8 km to Galhetas Waterfall. From there you visit the beaches of Antiguinhos, Antigos and Praia do Sono, where you stop for lunch before returning.

The trek covers about 16 km in total and is rated moderate. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking several hours a day on forest trails with climbs and descents. Accommodation is simple and rustic.
